FISH & CHIPS AT THE NEIGHBOURS' PLACE
When did it become normal for Australians to make fun of bogans? Australians used to be egalitarian. We used to mock snobs, toffs and posh folks.
When I was a kid, if a mobile phone rang, everyone called out "Yuppy!" Throw another shrimp on the barbie? Who the hell puts fancy stuff like that on a barbie? Snags, mate. Snags. And if the barbie doesn't work, fix it up with wire and get on with it.
When I first saw the film The Castle I felt like I was watching a mirror. Nowadays people parrot the quotes, but often with a kind of derision. (How's the serenity? Tell him he's dreamin'.) It's as if we're ashamed of it. Perhaps we are. We drink coffee now.
The movie is twenty years old, but there's one conversation which I'm sure I heard across the road from me yesterday.

Darryl: Oh, Steve, could you move the Camira? I need to get the Torana out so I can get to the Commodore.
Steve: I'll have to get the keys to the Cortina if I'm gonna move that Camira.
Darryl: Yeah. Watch the boat, mate.
The Castle, 1997
Tasmania has often been a few steps behind the rest of Australia and sometimes Tasmania just stands still while the rest of the world just keeps on running. I have a feeling Tassie will have driveways filled with cars for many, many years.
Fish and Chips at the Neighbours' Place is a bogan love song. I'm not meaning to be derogatory. I live in the outer suburbs, I drive a cheap car and live in a cheap house. Round here, people keep dogs as security guards, park their cars parked on the nature strip and ink their kids' names into their skin.
Me, I've got swirly two names on my left arm.
Fish and Chips at the Neighbour's Place is a love song. A love song from where I live.
